The county of Dorset on the south England coast is a county of contrasts, but will reward the traveler determined again and again. Pause in driving and jump the three rail journey time from London Waterloo to Bournemouth. Deer can often be seen as you pass by the New Forest According to Southampton, so keep an eye open.

Bournemouth is clean and prosperous seaside with hundreds of hotels ranging from the smallest, large international standard establishments. The beach is long and sandy, and though it may be busy on the weekends of summer, it is long enough to accommodate all comers.

Five miles east is the beautiful ancient city of Christchurch where the Priory stands side by side with the medieval monastery in ruins. Stroll along the twin rivers of Avon and Stour as they head for the sheltered harbor, and continues to the sea at Mudeford Quay. The Quay is well worth a visit too, if only to watch children of all ages get the crabs as a result of the run fast it runs in the channel.

To the west of Bournemouth is the revitalized town of Poole, and the large natural harbor, the second largest after Sydney. Make a boat trip to Brownsea Island and spot the rare red squirrels. Visit Sandbanks too, and Millionaires Row, where movie stars, people pop and sportsmen and women like to take a liking to the homes of modern art deco.

By the end of the Sandbanks peninsula to the old chain ferry, with the Studland Bay. There is a beautiful sandy beach here too and you can walk along the shore to the pretty village of Studland, but be aware that this is a nudist beach. And Italian is used at any time of year, making patterns souls much more robust than me! ITA not unknown for them to approach strangers too. It seems they hide a strange sense of humor!

Thence south towards Swanage. Stop off at Wareham and take a drink at the Inns on the picturesque quay. Take the Swanage road and pass the impressive ruin of Corfe Castle. Making a when climbing the fortifications, and experience the sensation of what it must be like defending a medieval castle.

Swanage is a small town typical English seaside, almost unchanged over the last fifty years, and no less interesting for that. You can get there by steam train on the Swanage Railway from Wareham. Travel west of Swanage and the terrain becomes more rugged. It is the country of Purbeck, the Purbeck Hills Purbeck stone, and the Jurassic Coast.

Towering cliffs, bizarre rock formations such as Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are worth seeking. This coast is known as the Jurassic Coast to the large number of dinosaur remains that have been and are still regularly discovered. The original Jurassic Park! Continue westward to Weymouth, another English seaside town. But Weymouth has much more to offer than most. The docks that boasts of boats fishing come and go with every tide, the nature reserve, and the Monk's Swannery in Abbotsbury. Buy fresh fish and crab boats moored dockside, take the seasonal quick ferry to Jersey and Guernsey. ITA journey of four hours, but you can return in a day. And donÂ't forget visit the strange place that is Portland Bill to the south and west of the city. Here in the Port of Portland as the Olympic sailing events in 2012.

Continue west to Lyme Regis, on the border of Devon. That's where Meryl Streep filmed the famous scenes A French Lieutenant of Woman on the Cobb, the old stone quay that curls into the Channel. Walking on it at your peril the wind is strong, because it is slippery and not flat!

Time to turn inside. Beaminster and the old church, before continuing on to the county town of Dorchester. This is the Thomas Hardy country, there is a statue of him in the top of the High Street. Dorchester is Casterbridge in his books, The Mayor of Casterbridge and Tess of DÂ'Urbervilles, and are memories of him everywhere.

Continue northward to Shaftesbury and Sherborne, home of Sir Walter Raleigh. Visit the Abbey, the castle and antique shops that abound in the city. In the northern county in the country and people differ significantly in the coastal strip. The slowing pace life, more time for everything. The terrain is rolling, green hills on chalk Downland which is home to rare breeds of sheep. In places huge sculptures were dug into the hillside where thin topsoil has been removed revealing the white chalk below. White horses, riders on horses, and pornography featuring medieval is the Giant of Cerne Abbas. Also visit Blandford Forum, another river town that can trace its heritage from the time Roman and beyond.

Take a little detour on the border with Wiltshire and see the county capital of Salisbury and the beautiful cathedral with tallest spire in England.

Dorset is a fine county to explore, full of picturesque thatched cottages, pubs and beautiful than anyone can enter at any reasonable time. Rest your feet for an hour, you donÂ't need to buy alcohol if you prefer not not youÂ'd be made just as welcome buying soft drinks and hearty crusty rolls. For the most part the food is good enough costly. Distances in Dorset between the towns are small and you can see many things in one week, but hey, two weeks would be great!
