Once upon a time, we all were very happy adding websites to the Internet. With just a few adjustments we could see our website and our client's website soar in the rankings of the major search engines. Having our website (or websites) listed quickly and showing on the first page of Google wasn't as hard as it is today. Granted, we had our way with the "Meta Tags" and the competition was not so bad.
This is all part of the past now. Not only Google, but all the other major search engines (and few small ones) found ways to stop those practices and created new "rules" to be played "by the book" if we want to see our website not only ranking, but also "NOT FALLING" so fast. But I ask myself..."Is there anything from the past that I can implement today to help me with the listings?" And the answer is yes...the TITLE TAG!
Maybe you are asking, "How important is the title of my website?". Very important! After the domain name, the title gives the second piece of information to the search engines regarding what your website is about. If done correctly, your website will be placed in the right niche from the get going.
Let's say you want to take MMA classes. Do you know any gym by name that has MMA classes as part of their curriculum? If you do, great. But for the majority of the people, the solution would be to going online and type the general keyword term "MMA classes" in the search box.
In case your business teaches MMA classes, the questions now are "will the search engines be able to identify my website with a MMA classes curriculum ? "Am I promoting more my services or the name of my Company?" Yes, when you type the name of your company you are on the first page, but what do you sell? what are your services?
Let's go back to MMA classes (you can use your own products and services as example ), type it into the search box...do you see your website on the first page now? The answer more likely to come up is...no! Do you get it now?
Unfortunately, this is a very common mistake made by business owners who have a website. Some people still believe that by simply creating a website the traffic naturally will come. I am really sorry for breaking down this for you, but it doesn't work that way anymore (if ever did).
Other very interesting detail for you, be sure to name the web page according to the keywords you want THAT PAGE to rank high for! One thing to remember...search engines rank PAGES not WEBSITES! If you need any help placing your website at the top of rankings, please, let me know and I will help you to get it on the first page of Google, Yahoo and Bing.
