Sprucing Up Online Training Certifications on Your Resume

by Colleen Burnham

Congratulations on your decision to take you a degree online! You have even gone as confining your choices to just a few training courses online. You may now be in the process of contemplating how a training course should appear in your resume, and how. Are you also worried about how potential employers may discriminate against your preferred online course, or how finding work abroad may be a challenge, since you don't know if your preferred online degree is recognized in other countries?

According to USA Today, there were about four hundred businesses which offered online training courses, and sold bogus degrees. This task of finding a reputable and authentic distance learning institution is entirely up to you. Some online learning services may be legit but what about the quality and conducive-ness to learning? Like anything, getting an online degree comes with risks.

Because of the scams by distance learning companies, employers are questioning the authenticity of online degrees. Specifically, they are apprehensive about the curriculum, content and environment established by these learning institutions, and its effect on a student.

The US Government National Education Board's concern over this has grown, so to help students pursue a online degree that is both valid and of good quality, it has given license to six accreditation organizations to accredit and monitor e-learning centers that offer online degrees and distance education. This system was created to prevent bogus companies from issuing fake degrees, and to ensure that the quality of these online institutions meet its standards.

E-learning providers are heavily competing to be the best in the industry by equipping their centres with features that allow for convenience and conduciveness to learning. They now have online libraries, testing sites and even virtual classrooms. The courses offered by these institutions are accredited not only by the government's appointed accrediting agencies, but also international evaluators for online education.

There are some online courses that are to be accredited by specialized licensing agencies. This is because the programs need to be of excellent quality and meet superior standards. To be able to accredit them, these agencies look into the curriculum.

Many employers rely on the fact that a distance learning company where an applicant has obtained their degree is accredited by a government-appointed agency. Graduates and even parents of potential online learners feel more assured of an online training qualification if the institution is duly accredited.

To save yourself from the inconvenience of a bogus degree, be sure to verify whether your preferred online program and distance learning center has been recognized by agencies appointed by the US Department of Education. You may also consult with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). This NGO is actively involved in dealing with accreditation and legitimacy concerns of online distance learning centres and their students. They are in-charge of developing policies through research for online institutions and programs.

You must be detailed when you incorporate your online degree in your resume, specifying the program accreditation, curriculum and its relevance to the position applied for. Your potential employer will most likely verify him or herself, the validity and accreditation of your chosen course. It is but natural for employers to eye you with suspiciously upon seeing your online degree on your resume, but he or she will ease up to you as soon as your degree proves to be authentic. Do not take it personally, employers simply wish to see an accreditation from the US Department of Education to ensure that your online training has in fact, taught you well.
